Bhilai, also called Bhilai Nagar, city and major industrial centre, central Chhattisgarh state, east-central India. It was part of the Haihaivanshi Rajputs kingdom until 1740, when it passed to maratha rule rule. It was administered by the British from 1853 until its merger with the Indian union in 1947. From then until the creation of Chhattisgarh state in 2000, it was in Madhya Pradesh state.
Located on the South Eastern railway about 6 Km west of the city of Durg, Bhilai is a planned city, divided into sectors.  Nearest Airport  is located 50 Km away- i.e at Raipur, capital of chattisgarh state
The city is located 22 km west of the capital Raipur on the Howrah-Mumbai rail line, and  National Highway 6, it is located southwest of Chhattisgarh state of India, it’s latitude is 21 13' 0 N and longitude is 81 25' 60 E. Average temperature in summer: minimum 25 degree celcius and maximum temperature  is 48 degree celcius ,in winter minimum 12 degree celcius and maximum 32 degree celcius. Annual rainfall is 1,800 millimeters and rainfall period is from June to September.

Bhilai had a population of  625,697 according to 2011 census
. Its height from sea level (Altitude) is 961 feet or 292 meters. Population density per Sq KM is 6251.
The pace of development has increased since the formation of Chhattisgarh. Bhilai has become famous after establishment of Bhilai steel Plant in 1956. The city itself is a very calm and peaceful place. The employees of Bhilai Steel Plant are the primary residents of the town. Unlike other industrial towns, the residential areas in Bhilai are clean and green. Due to the employment opportunities created by the Bhilai Steel Plant, people from all over the country flock here and the culture here provides a scintillating example of "Unity in Diversity". Common languages are Chhattisgarhi and Hindi.

Bhilai has become famous after the costruction of Bhilai Steel Plant.


Hindustan Steel Private Limited was set up on January 19, 1954. Hindustan Steel (HSL) was initially designed to manage only one plant that was coming up at Rourkela. For Bhilai and Durgapur Steel Plants, the preliminary work was done by the Iron and Steel Ministry. From April 1957, the supervision and control of these two steel plants were also transferred to Hindustan Steel. The registered office was originally in New Delhi. It moved to Calcutta in July 1956, and ultimately to Ranchi inDecember1959.

The 1 MT phases of Bhilai and Rourkela Steel Plants were completed by the end of December 1961. The 1 MT phase of Durgapur Steel Plant was completed in January 1962 after commissioning of the Wheel and Axle plant. The crude steel production of HSL went up from .158 MT (1959-60) to 1.6 MT. A new steel company, Bokaro Steel Limited, was incorporated in January 1964 to construct and operate the steel plant at Bokaro.The second phase of Bhilai Steel Plant was completed in September 1967 after commissioning of the Wire Rod Mill. The last unit of the 1.8 MT phase of Rourkela - the Tandem Mill - was commissioned in February 1968, and the 1.6 MT stage of Durgapur Steel Plant was completed in August 1969 after commissioning of the Furnace in SMS. Thus, with the completion of the 2.5 MT stage at Bhilai, 1.8 MT at Rourkela and 1.6 MT at Durgapur, the total crude steel production capacity of HSL was raised to 3.7 MT in 1968-69 and subsequently to 4MTin1972-73.

The Ministry of Steel and Mines drafted a policy statement to evolve a new model for managing industry. The policy statement was presented to the Parliament on December 2, 1972. On this basis the concept of creating a holding company to manage inputs and outputs under one umbrella was mooted. This led to the formation of Steel Authority of India Ltd. The company, incorporated on January 24, 1973 with an authorized capital of Rs. 2000 crore, was made responsible for managing five integrated steel plants at Bhilai, Bokaro, Durgapur, Rourkela and Burnpur, the Alloy Steel Plant and the Salem Steel Plant. In 1978 SAIL was restructured as an operating company.
Bhilai steel Plants’s Modernization & Expansion Programme: As an integral part of SAIL’s growth plan that envisages capacity augmentation to around 23 MT crude steel by the year 2012 , projects worth Rs 17265 crores are being executed after which Bhilai’s capacity would be enhanced to 7.5 MT of hot metal and 7 MT of crude steel.

The Maitri Bagh- Park , Zoo  and Musical fountain  are established by the Bhilai Steel Plant.    




      

                      

Civic Center ( Officially known as  Indira place)- A shopping center consisting of two rows of shops & stores arranged in L shape, earlier known as BATA to  TATA (Bata shoes to Tata textiles) . Hariraj restaurant has replaced TATA textiles.  This was the only hub for lots of social activities, entertainment and shopping for long time before Bhilai expanded beyond its boundaries when shopping complexes like Akash Ganga in Supela  and Chauhan complex  on GE road . A garden exists with facility  to teach traffic-signs and signals. In East of the Civic-Center, there is open place with stage which is known as 'Open-Air-Theatre' and used for various cultural activities including musical nights. Right next to Civic Center is Kala Mandir theater used for various purposes. South of Kala Mandir is a huge field used for Ramleela and Dashehara festivals. New Civic Center started its operation in 80's which is a major educational and IT hub.

Deobaloda - It is situated about 3 km from Bhilai and is famous for an ancient Shiv Mandir.

Tandula - It is 60 km away from the district of Durg. It is famous for Dam on the river Tandula. It is an exciting picnic spot. One can stay here in the rest house of the irrigation department of the government of India.

Dhamdha - It is situated on the Durg-Bemetara road 35 km from the district of Durg. It is famous for Prachin Kila (Old Palace) & Mandir.

Dongargarh - It is situated about 100 km west of Bhilai and is the site for the most famous temple in the region. The Bambleshwari temple is visible from the railway line and is on the top of mountain. Devotees routinely climb the mountain which can take up to an 1 hr chanting mantra and singing praises of Maa Bambleshwari. The view from the top of the hill makes all the hard work worthwhile. There are gift stores and a restaurant on the top of the hill just below the stairs that lead to the final climb to the temple. There is also a cable car for devotees who would rather not climb. Jai Bambleshwari!

Balod - It is situated at 58 km from the district of Durg. It is famous for Prachin Kila (Oldest Palace), Ganga Maiya Temple and Sati Chabutra.

Siyadevi - 80 K.m from Durg city
. This place is famous for Sita Maiya's temple, situated in the heart of greenery of natural jungle. You can find a natural and very beautiful waterfall .


Nagpura - Nagpura is famous for Jain Temples & Pasharwanath Tirth. Uwasaggaharam
Parshwa Teerth is the prime attraction here. Thousands of devotees visit the shrine especially on every full-moon night. Sheonath River has its course through Nagpura. It is situated at 20km. from  Durg.
Kharkhara - It is 95 km. away from the district of Durg by road. It is famous for Dam on the river Kharkhara. The total length of the dam is 1128 m.

Hajra Falls - It is 100 km from Bhilai, crossing Dongargarh near Darekasa Railway station in Howrah Mumbai rail route. Situated amongst dense forests, hills and tunnels, this spectacular 150 feet (46 m) high falls is a visual delight for tourists. Place to stay : The Forest bungalow.

Barnawapara - An animal sanctuary famous for Wild Buffalo, Leopard, Common Langur, Cheetal deer
